market research is taking surveys, questionnaires, trial of different but similar products or even brand names. In other words it is a fact finding exercise and process. It culminates in a research report with your findings
marketing is finding the best way to present your product to the market through advertising and presentation medias and sales representations that culminates in a sale of your product.
Good question, made me think.
Thanks

I’m sure you’ve heard of top-down vs. bottom-up approaches.
Market research is bottom-up. First they figure out what people need, and then they come up with ideas for creating solutions to those problems.
Marketing tends to be more top-down because they come up with an idea first and then rely on marketing techniques to convince people to buy it. Consider all these Billy Mayes infomercials, that’s an example of marketting. A lot of times the product is a bad idea, doesn’t work, and doesn’t solve your problems, but the company makes up for this with heavy marketing.
