I have ATT’s Pro Internet service and I use the ethernet cable and the modem. What do I need to buy or do to create a wireless internet network?

My situtaion is that I have a desktop with a Verizon modem and a router. That desktop is currently connected to the Internet but I would like to connect my other desktop to the Internet too but it is in a different room. How do I go about doing this?

I have a Windows XP laptop, and I have a external wireless card. It detects the connection and says that it is connected to the internet, but the internet does not work. When I try to connect directly with my modem, again the internet does not work. I know my wireless adapter works because I tested it with another computer.
